Petersburg National Battlefield

The Petersburg National Battlefield was established in July 3, 1926 and is 2,740 acres in size. It is comprised of three units, the Eastern Front Visitor Center and Park Tour Road, the Five Forks Battlefield and the City Point Unit. The 8.72-acre Poplar Grove National Cemetery is administered by Petersburg National Battlefield. The Siege of Petersburg lasted for Nine and a half months. It ended when Gen. Ulysses S. Grant cut off all of Petersburg's supply lines ensuring the fall of Richmond on April 3, 1865. Gen. Robert E. Lee would surrender the Army of Northern Virginia six days later at Appomattox Courthouse.

Dictator – a 13-inch seacoast mortar that could lob a 225 pound explosive shell more than two miles. A mortar similar to this one was used by the federal forces at Petersburg.
