Inscription on the rear of the monument:

Early on the 20th the brigade was posted on the east slope of the ridge west of the Crawfish Springs Road with a 39th Indiana Mounted Infantry of Willich’s Brigade on its left. Upon the attack of Hindman’s Division, upon the Union troops near Widow Glenn’s Wilder charged, dismounted, upon Hindman’s left flank, and forced the left of Mabigault’s Brigade back across the Lafayette road. Subsequently the brigade withdrew to the ridge west of the Crawfish Springs Road, and later to Chattanooga Valley, where it covered the withdrawal of troops and transportation to Chattanooga.


Casualties during the battle: killed 13; wounded 94; captured or missing18; total 125.

This monument is visible from the road. It is located at N 34° 54.4535  W 85° 16.3505. Map it

Parking is available on Vittetoe-Chickamauga Road near  N 34° 54.4252  W 85° 16.3442 .


To reach this monument:
Parking is available at Wilder’s Tower on Vittetoe-Chickamauga Road. The plaque is just north of the tower. Addition parking is available in a second lot off of Glenn-Viniard Road.

One or more plaques are missing.


Comments about this monument:
The plaques on the Chickamauga Battlefield were installed by the War Department in 1890. These plaques are blue indicating they are for a Federal unit. Plaques are listed in the NPS List of Classified Structures as a batch input, Structure Number HS-Batch-3.
