Stanford's Mississippi Battery.
4-3 inch rifles.
Strahl’s Brigade, Cheatham’s Division, Polk’s Corps.
September 19, 1863.

Capt. Thomas. J. Stanford, Commanding
1st Lieut. Hugh. R. McSwine.
2nd Lieut. James S. McCall.
2nd Lieut. William A. Brown.

After crossing the Chickamauga Creek early in the morning at Dalton’s Ford, the battery followed in rear of the brigade ready at all times to come into action. The ground not being favorable the battery was not engaged until about 3:30 P.M., when the battery opened from this position on the enemy, firing only a few rounds. It was not engaged on the 20th. No casualties reported.

To reach this monument:
This marker is located off of a hiking path that connects Alexanders Bridge Road and Brotherton Road. Park on the south side of Alexanders Bridge Road near Huggin's Tennessee Battery (CSA, MT-1361). Follow the path southeast to the shell monument for Brig. Gen. Preston Smith (CSA). A path will lead south to this tablet.
