Deshler's Brigade appeared in front of this position at dusk September 19th. After developing the line of Dodge's Brigade of Johnson's Division it moved to its left for the purpose of turning the right flank of that command. This move uncovered the front of Dodge's Brigade and Preston Smith's Brigade of Cheatham's Division moved in the darkness directly upon the front of Dodge's line supposing it to be Deshler's. Preston Smith and two of his staff were killed. Meantime Deshler's Brigade had enveloped the right flank of Dodge's command resulting in the capture of nearly the whole of the 77th Pennsylvania, and about half of the 79th Illinois. The action lasted for some time after dark. The Union troops at its close withdrawing to the Kelly field.
