In the advance of Breckinridge's division from east of the Kelly field the 6th Kentucky on the right of the brigade the 4th Kentucky next in line with it and six companies of the 41st Alabama cleared the Union log works on the east line of the Kelly field and reached this line. In the advance they struck the 15th Kentucky and 104th Illinois of John Beatty's brigade in front and flank pressed them back and at this point captured two guns of Bridge's battery attached to that brigade. This portion of Helm's brigade under the command of Colonel J. H. Lewis of the 6th Kentucky was then withdrawn and reformed with the left of the brigade near the position from which it originally advanced.

Strength in action September 20, 1404 officers and men.

Casualties killed 63 wounded 408.
