Deshler's Brigade formed on this ground as the left of Cleburne’s division soon after sunset, Sept. 19, with Woods Brigade on its right. It moved forward in the direction of the Winfrey house. At dusk, supported by Preston Smith’s Brigade of Cheatham’s Division, it attacked the front of Johnson’s Division and became involved in a desperate night fight.

The plaques on the Chickamauga Battlefield were installed by the War Department in 1890. This plaque is red indicating it is for a Confederate unit.
